BUTCH:

My name is Butch. I’m from Louisville, Kentucky, and I manage a warehouse. I’m as happy as can be when I’m at home, hanging out with my family and friends, washing my car, cutting my grass, stuff like that.

I was diagnosed with Hepatitis C back in, I believe, 2010. First, my wife was diagnosed with it and, um, when she came home, she explained to me what the doctor told her, and it’d be a good idea for me to go in and be tested. So, um, I made an appointment, and I went in…

Cure means the Hep C virus is not detected in the blood when measured three months after treatment is completed.

BUTCH:

…and I was tested, and I seen that I had Hepatitis C, too.

I tried Interferon as part of my treatment for Hep C. That was the standard back then. But, um, the side effects were too much for me, and I had to stop taking it.

After I failed Interferon, I was thinking there’s nothing that can be done, and it was something that I was just going to have to live with.

It was always in the back of my mind. With my Hep C, I had no symptoms, but, um, I was scared I might pass it on to one of my kids, and I worried that it might catch up to me as I got older. I knew I needed to take care of myself and treat my Hep C.

Then, one day I started seeing ads for EPCLUSA. That got me thinking. I should get treatment for my Hep C, and I shouldn’t put it off. I went to the doctor. They did blood work. I found out I was genotype 2.

My doctor said EPCLUSA would be a good option for me because it treats all types of chronic Hep C.

TEXT ON-SCREEN:

Before starting EPCLUSA, your doctor will test if you have had hepatitis B, which may flare up, and could cause serious liver problems during and after treatment.

BUTCH:

He said it could be taken with or without food and I only had to take it for 12 weeks, rather than injections with Interferon. I was happy to know EPCLUSA was not like Interferon.

I have a great relationship with my doctor, and I really trusted his opinion.

My doctor and I talked about any other kind of medications that I was taking that might interact with EPCLUSA.

TEXT ON-SCREEN:

EPCLUSA and certain medicines may affect each other, or cause side effect.

BUTCH:

We also went over the common side effects of EPCLUSA like headache and tiredness.

After all that time, I wanted to be cured of my Hep C and put it behind me.

The cost of treatment almost turned me away from it. With the co-pay coupon, it made it affordable for me.

TEXT ON-SCREEN:

Pay as little as $5 per co-pay.

Restrictions apply. See terms & conditions.

BUTCH:

I took EPCLUSA every morning right after I got out of the shower. I took it with my other medications.

TEXT ON-SCREEN:

Talk to your doctor about any other medicines you are taking.

BUTCH:

For me, it was easy to remember to take one more pill as part of my routine.

BUTCH:

Then, I had my follow up appointment, and the blood work showed that it was completely gone. I was cured of my Hep C.

TEXT ON-SCREEN:

BUTCH:

It was a big relief. It was like a burden off my shoulders. I mean, I was probably the happiest guy around town. I was like, “Why didn’t I do this sooner?” I wish I would have cured my Hep C with EPCLUSA sooner.

My wife was cured with EPCLUSA as well. We were totally thrilled!

CHRIS:

I’m Chris. I’m from South Carolina, born and raised. I’m a father of two, happily married. I work in an auto shop, mainly oil changes and stuff like that.

I was diagnosed with hepatitis C in February of 2004. I absolutely blame myself for it. You know, I’d been using intravenous drugs for quite some time.

After I got clean, things were going better, but I knew that it would catch up to me one day, and I was scared I wouldn’t get to see my kids graduate high school.

I eventually went and seen a doctor. He told me, he said, “Your liver is in pretty bad shape. We need to get you on some kind of treatment now.” And that’s when he told me about EPCLUSA.

I would get up every morning, do my regular daily routine. At lunchtime, I would take one pill, and it was just really, really simple.

Three months after I finished treatment, I went to the doctor, and I found out that my hepatitis C was non-detectable. That meant that I’m cured, that my Hep C was finally gone!

TOBY:

I used to be a drug addict. I wanted to numb just the pain that I had inside me. Drugs got me in a lot of trouble. I spent at least 25 years of my life behind bars. So many years being in that little cage. My connection to the world was non-existent. I just felt like nobody seen me, nobody cared about me.

TOBY:

That was extremely hard for me, you know? While I was serving my last sentence, I found out that I had Hepatitis C.

My eyes were definitely jaundice, yellow. I was extremely concerned, I–that it was gonna get worse, and I really wanted to get treatment. By that point, I had made the decision to stop using drugs, and I knew in my heart that I’m never going back to that lifestyle again. So I was ready for a cure.

After I got out, I seen my primary care physician. She referred me to a liver specialist. I saw the specialist through virtual appointment. It was really convenient for me. He looked at my labs, and he said that EPCLUSA was the right treatment for me. EPCLUSA treats all main types of chronic Hep C.

So, my doctor called in the prescription to the specialty pharmacy. Not long after that, my first shipment of EPCLUSA came in the mail.

…I mean, I was emotional. I just felt… man, it just felt so good that I’ve done all this work to change my life around, and now I don’t gotta worry about this Hepatitis C anymore. I felt like a nobody, and when–once I got cured, I felt like a somebody.

Looking back on everything that I’ve been through, my past and everything, getting cured for Hep C was not that hard. I never imagined that I’d ever reach this point.

I am free from my past, and I’m free from Hepatitis C. It feels unbelievable!

I feel, uhm, very validated in being a productive member of society. I got a great marriage. I got a great life. As a former addict, I know that I’ll always be working on my recovery, but uhm, I don’t have any desire to use drugs ever again.

If you’re living with Hep C and you’re ready to give that old life up, I’d say do not wait. Do not hesitate.

TEXT ON-SCREEN:

CHRIS:

…My name is Christopher. I’m the proud father of six, grandfather of two, and a Navy veteran.

Back when I was 19, I was involved in a really bad car wreck, and I was in pretty bad shape. I was hospitalized for a few days and received several blood transfusions. And, as a result of that, I acquired hepatitis.

Initially, I didn’t you know really think about hepatitis at all. I just thought it was a temporary thing.

Years later, I went to my doctor. We did some routine blood work, and the doctor came back into the room and said, “Were you aware that you had hepatitis C?” And that was the first time that I’d heard the term hepatitis C mentioned, and I remember specifically saying, “Well, how do we cure it? What do we need to do?”

And, at the time, they were basically saying that there really wasn’t any sure-fire method of curing Hep C, so I was extremely concerned. You know, liver disease, Hep C, that’s not a very pretty thing, and my biggest fear was that my kids or my wife would have to watch me, you know, go through that.

I started working with a specialist, and my diagnosis was confirmed–hepatitis C, genotype 1. It was explained to me that there are several types of Hep C and that genotype 1 was pretty common.

I tried a couple of different injectable treatments over the years. For me, going through those treatments was challenging, and ultimately, those treatments were not effective for me. I was told that I would be clear, but it didn’t work out that way. Both times, following both treatments, the virus came back, and we were back to square one.

By the time the virus reappeared following the second treatment, I was done. I just decided to live my life as best I could, knowing that Hep C would eventually catch up to me.

Then, one day, I heard about a treatment option called EPCLUSA. EPCLUSA treats all main types of chronic Hep C. For most people, it requires one pill a day, once a day for 12 weeks, and also it can be taken with or without food...

TEXT ON-SCREEN:

EPCLUSA is a prescription medicine used to treat adults with chronic (lasting a long time) hepatitis C (Hep C) genotype 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6 infection with or without cirrhosis (compensated). In those with advanced cirrhosis (decompensated), EPCLUSA is used with ribavirin.

CHRIS:

…I admit I was somewhat skeptical because I’d been through two rounds of treatment previously. So, I really wanted to get all the information I could from my doctor. He walked me through what to expect, how treatment would work…

TEXT ON-SCREEN:

Before starting EPCLUSA treatment, your healthcare provider will do blood tests to check for hepatitis B infection. If you have ever had hepatitis B, the hepatitis B virus could become active again during and after treatment with EPCLUSA. This may cause serious liver problems including liver failure and death. CHRIS:

…and that it has an overall cure rate of 98%. I didn’t think a true cure for Hep C was possible, but, um, I was cautiously optimistic that it might work for me.

TEXT ON-SCREEN:

In clinical studies, EPCLUSA had a high overall cure rate of 98% in patients with genotypes 1-6.

Cure means the Hep C virus is not detectable in the blood when measured three months after treatment is completed.

CHRIS:

My medical team and I talked about common side effects of EPCLUSA, like headaches and tiredness. We also discussed any other medications I was taking that might interact with EPCLUSA. And we talked about the blood tests that they would have to perform before I started treatment.

TEXT ON-SCREEN:

Taking amiodarone with EPCLUSA may cause a serious slowing of your heart rate. Common side effects of EPCLUSA include headache and tiredness.

CHRIS:

Ultimately, I felt like this was the right treatment for me, and we decided to move forward.

It was a simple treatment regimen: One pill once a day for 12 weeks. I made it part of my routine and took it the same time each day. Side effects were not a problem for me, but everyone’s experience with EPCLUSA may be different.

TEXT ON-SCREEN:

Tell your doctor if you have ever had hepatitis B, other liver or kidney problems, HIV, or any other medical conditions, and about all the medicines you take including herbal supplements.

CHRIS:

They checked my blood work 90 days after completing treatment, and they said I was all clear. They told me I was cured of Hep C. Personally, you know, I took it in, I understood what they meant by that, but given my personal experience, it just took me a little while to mentally take that in and to emotionally believe. It had been so difficult and such a journey. For somebody after 90 days to say, “You’re cured,” it was just unbelievable!

I had a conversation with my youngest son, and he said, “Dad, I look at you, and you’re like a phoenix rising.” (Laughs) And I said, “What do you mean by that?” And he said, “You’ve overcome so much, Dad. I’m so proud of you!” (chokes up) That was really, you know, good to hear.

• Slow heart rate (bradycardia): EPCLUSA, when taken with amiodarone (Cordarone®, Nexterone®, Pacerone®), a medicine used to treat certain heart problems, may cause slow heart rate. In some cases slow heart rate has led to death or the need for a pacemaker when amiodarone is taken with medicines containing sofosbuvir. Get medical help right away if you take amiodarone with EPCLUSA and get any of the following symptoms: fainting or near-fainting, dizziness or lightheadedness, not feeling well, weakness, extreme tiredness, shortness of breath, chest pains, confusion, or memory problems. The most common side effects of EPCLUSA include headache and tiredness. Tell your healthcare provider if you have any side effect that bothers you or does not go away.

CHRIS:

My wife, my family, my kids and I are looking forward to living a life free of Hep C and the worries and concerns with it, and we’re very grateful that, you know, I was able to be treated successfully and that I am cured today.

I want to inspire other people that are living with Hep C.

You know, it’s definitely curable, and so I encourage anybody that has Hep C to go talk to their doctor about effective treatments.

Even if you’ve had treatment before and it didn’t work out, there may be another option available for you today.

TEXT ON-SCREEN:

Cure means the Hep C virus is not detected in the blood when measured three months after treatment is completed.

CHRIS:

EPCLUSA was definitely my kind of cure.
